Director´s Resume
Al Cobb - Director

Al Cobb - SIPschoolIn addition to overseeing all aspects of the SIPschool, Al acts as the lead instructor for most of the schools courses. His experience in construction, engineering, carpentry, and business management combine with an 19 year history in the SIP industry to provide a very diverse field of knowledge.

Al was exposed to commercial, industrial and residential construction since the early 70s. He owned his own business at the age of 18 while working in demolition and renovation in the District of Columbia. His formal education includes three years of university study followed by six years of nuclear engineering training with the US Navy. In the late 80s, Al took a position of plant manager for an EPS manufacturer located in Northern Virginia. His knowledge of EPS and related foams was fine tuned as the 70K sqft facility grew to one of the largest EPS providers on the East Coast. In the early 90s, Al was tasked with developing the SIP production capabilities at his facility. During this time Al designed and built many SIP specific tools and production equipment including the largest pneumatic press of its day (9` X 28`).

By the end of the century, Al had returned to self-employment with the start of PanelWrights, LLC. The growth and success of his company was based on Al`s commitment to providing quality installations in conjunction with the complete SIP package. These services where further complimented by complete design and engineering services. To date, Als distribution and installation company has completed over 450 SIP projects. These projects have included commercial, institutional, LEED, timber frame, hybrid and have been completed in more then half of the States. Over the years, Al has worked with, installed, and manufactured almost every type of panel known to the SIP industry.

Al has maintained involvement with the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) for over 15 years and is currently a member of their Board of Directors.

Over the past three years Al has presented seminars at the NAHB`s International Building Show on everything from SIP basics to advanced concepts in SIP design and installation. In addition, he can claim speaking engagements for EEBA, AIA, TFG, and countless Builders and inspectors.

He and his company have been responsible for many high-profile projects including:

  • The Sustainable Research House on the National Mall
  • The Captain Planet Zero-Energy House on the National Mall
  • Two Solar Decathlon Houses
  • The first Platinum LEEDs project ever built
  • Cherokee Central School - 400K sq ft of panels, making it the largest SIP project ever built

Over the years Al has grown and developed a network of builders, installers, and design professionals that work with PanelWrights. This group has helped to grow the SIP industry throughout the Eastern United States.
